book design project for Little Lemur's Day at the Beach

Little Lemur’s Day at the Beach: A Counting to Five Story by Melinda Conley, illustrated by Stacey Maree, is a delightful and educational story designed to teach young readers the basics of counting. This book takes children on a fun journey, introducing counting from 1 to 5 through interactive scenarios with Little Lemur and her friend Daisy. My task was to create a cover and layout that would both engage and educate early learners, balancing fun and personality with strong readability.

My book design service

Cover and layout design

With a passion for children’s book design, I specialise in creating fun, engaging designs that capture the spirit of a story while ensuring clarity and ease of reading for young audiences. For Little Lemur’s Day at the Beach, I worked closely with Vanessa Barrington at Healing House Publishing to design a vibrant, playful layout that would appeal to children while reinforcing the educational content. My goal was to create a design that would seamlessly complement the engaging illustrations while offering clear, simple typography suitable for early readers.

The Challenge

As a children's book designer, the challenge was balancing fun and readability for young readers.

The challenge with Little Lemur’s Day at the Beach was striking the right balance between fun and readability. While the book needed to be playful and engaging to hold the attention of young readers, it was equally important to ensure that the typography remained clear and easy to read. The goal was to create a cover and layout that would appeal to children ages 3-8, fostering both their love of learning and their confidence in counting.

The Solution

For the cover, I selected a chunky, personality-filled serif font for the title, giving it a fun, playful look that would catch the eye of young readers. The typography on the cover also helps define the Little Lemur series: the character name “Little Lemur” is styled larger and in green, while “Day at the Beach” is presented in a smaller black font underneath, emphasising that this is the first book in the series. The green colour also appears on the book spine, establishing a visual identity for the series. For the internal layout, I chose a simple sans serif font for readability, ensuring that young readers would have a smooth, enjoyable reading experience. Each page was carefully designed to complement the vibrant illustrations while maintaining a clear structure that would guide children through the story.

This design approach gives Little Lemur’s Day at the Beach a lively, inviting look while keeping the typography simple and easy to follow for early learners. The result is a book that’s both fun and functional, ideal for children just beginning their journey with numbers.
