Magical Dreams and Sewing Machines is a heartfelt, nostalgic debut from Sydney-based author Maria O’Connor. A gentle coming-of-age story about creativity, connection, and finding your voice. Set in the 1980s and illustrated by Maria’s daughter Angelina, the book follows 14-year-old Elena as she navigates change, belonging, and the quiet magic of her Nonna’s fashion atelier. With its handmade heart, intergenerational warmth, and scenes that travel from Sydney to Paris, this project was a beautiful collaboration across generations, and a joy to design from cover to final page.
With a background in magazine publishing, I understand how to bring stories to life on the printed page — not just visually, but structurally. I design book covers and layouts that feel emotionally aligned with the story inside, while also meeting the technical demands of both print-on-demand platforms and traditional offset runs. Every design is crafted with a clear eye for consistency, readability, and that all-important tactile finish — so the book not only looks beautiful, but feels just right in the reader’s hands.
This debut novel needed to appeal to a wide middle-grade and young teen audience — something charming and accessible for creative eight-year-olds, while still resonant for introspective fourteen-year-olds. The story is set in the 1980s and carries a strong emotional thread of family, self-discovery, and personal expression. Maria provided a series of hand-drawn, black-and-white illustrations by her daughter Angelina, which needed to be seamlessly integrated across the book’s chapters.
The visual direction was clear: the design needed to feel warm, nostalgic, and quietly magical — with Parisian flair and vintage charm. Internally, the layout required adjustments to suit younger readers: slightly larger type, generous line spacing, and a clean, spacious structure. Each chapter opened with an illustration and closed with a poem, so the rhythm of the page needed to support those moments of reflection and creativity.
The cover design features a portrait of Ebonie with transparent layers, allowing the rising sun to shine through the clouds — a powerful metaphor for light emerging from darkness. This symbol of growth and healing was paired with a beach backdrop, evoking the sense of where Ebonie grew up, grounding her journey in her personal experience. The solid sans serif font for the title ensures clarity and impact, while the handwritten subheading reflects the intimate and personal nature of the memoir. Additionally, I worked closely with Healing House Publishing and Ebonie to design the internal layout and prepare files for Ingram Spark print-on-demand publishing, ensuring a seamless production process.
With my background in print design, I was able to approach this project with a balance of emotional depth and technical precision, ensuring that every design element enhanced Ebonie’s powerful narrative while maintaining professional print standards.
