Defining your target market and ideal client

defining your target market

Defining your target market is up there with some of the most important ground work you will do when creating and designing your brand. In fact, it takes up quite a bit of space in my Brand Clarity Workbook (psst you can download it here). To be able to successfully market your business, you need to know exactly who you are trying to talk to. And I don’t just mean something vague like “women with kids over age 40”. You need to get specific!

Having a really clear picture of your ideal client will allow you to identify their pain points, how you can help them, create content specifically for them and ultimately increase your sales as you’ll be connecting with the right people.

Below are some of the things you should be considering:

The basics

What is the gender, age bracket and location of your target market?

Family

Do they have children? Are they single, in a relationship or married?

Work and education

What do they do for work? What is their level of education? What is their salary/budget?

Values

What are their goals and values? Are they politically more right or left leaning? What is important to them?

Interests

How do they spend their free time? What do they do for fun? Where do they spend their money?

How can your service help solve a problem for them?

What is important to them in the solution. What can you offer them that allows you to stand out from the rest?
